Due to an external event taking place at the museum, the museum will be exceptionally closed on Thursday 26th June.

Additionally, due to ongoing works, certain areas of the museum will remain closed:

  • The terraces of the Cinquantenaire Arcade and the Arcade Hall, which houses our permanent Napoleon collection. However, a temporary exhibition and a virtual reality experience about Napoleon are available in another part of the museum.
  • Part of the mezzanine in the Aviation Hall.

Sowing Eagles: 200 years of forging Waterloo battlefield relics

Drawing on a wealth of previously unpublished sources, this article examines the trade and production of artefacts and other objects associated with the Waterloo battlefield. The authors show that, beginning in 1815, a profitable trade emerged on the Brabant Plain, initially characterised by tourists violating graves. This was followed by the development of a thriving industry in forged artefacts, primarily targeting British visitors — although French and German tourists were also aware of the phenomenon. (...)
